Why is alternative care for Veterans important?


Pain is one of the most common issues that Americans suffer from. People can suffer from both acute and chronic pain conditions. Acute pain may include, sprains/strains, broken bones, or immediate injury. While chronic pain can be ongoing and usually lasts longer than 6 months. Chronic pain may be due to repetitive injury, stress, or other diseases. According to the CDC, over 50 million U.S. adults suffer from chronic pain, such as low back pain, which impacts their overall quality of life. Chronic pain may be more prevalent in the Veteran population rather than the general public, contributing to factors such as stress, anxiety, poor sleep, and decreased quality of life.

Veterans and active members of the military are at particularly high risk for stress-induced health problems such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and substance abuse. According to the National Center for PTSD, the number of Veterans who experience PTSD in a given year will vary depending on their service era. Eleven-Twenty-two out of 100 (11-20%) Veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan during Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) suffer from PTSD.  Twelve out of 100 (12%) Veterans who served in the Gulf War (Desert Storm) experience PTSD. Fifteen out of 100 (15%) who served in Vietnam have currently been diagnosed with PTSD, but could be in upwards of 30% of Vietnam Veterans suffer from PTSD. Other factors also contribute to stress (PTSD) and other mental health issues that Veterans face.


How does Acupuncture and Chinese medicine work?


Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can alleviate pain and stress symptoms by releasing endorphins, which are the body’s own natural painkillers. Through improving the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids, which brings fresh oxygen to body tissues, pain symptoms can be reduced. The increased oxygen flow eliminates waste products from inside the body, helps boost the immune system, and enhances recovery from other diseases.


Studies show that Chinese medicine, which includes acupuncture, herbs, massage, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, can significantly help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine helps decrease the stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, reduces heart rate, and relaxes muscle tissue. The health benefits offered by Chinese medicine, when used in conjunction with Western therapies, could have a large impact on the well-being and quality of life of active military and veterans.
